Anonymous, circa 6th century. Amulet (Bronze, 62 mm, 8.78 g, 12 h), Evil Eye amulet composed of two attached copper plates with repoussé designs. +O AΓ/IOC - Θ-Є-OΔOPOC ('Saint Theodore') Saint Theodore on horseback to right, nimbate, spearing demon, lying on the ground. Rev. KVPIЄ / ROHΘI ('Lord, help') Evil Eye, in the center, being pierced from above and attacked by wild animals from below; to left and right, stars. Cf. J. Russell: The Archaeological Context of Magic in the Early Byzantine Period, in: Henry Maguire (ed.), Byzantine Magic (Dumbarton Oaks 1995), p. 35-50, fig. 5 and 6. A very interesting early Evil Eye amulet, with the Holy Rider remarkably named Saint Theodore. Some surface cracks, otherwise, very fine.
